Christopher Place
American Radiology Services proudly supports the Christopher Place Employment Academy based in downtown Baltimore. This academy is a residential employment program that provides education and training as well as emotional, spiritual, and addiction recovery support to formerly homeless men. The program supports these men in the transition from a lifestyle of homelessness and substance abuse/dependency to a positive life change in training toward future employment and stable living.
During the course of the year, the ARS staff gets involved by preparing and serving meals to the men about once every other month and by conducting clothing drives several times a year. The ARS staff also prepares a large holiday meal and graciously fulfills a wish list for each participant in the program. Our staff enjoys the involvement and giving back to the community while the men in the program enjoy home cooked meals and relaxing while sitting and talking with new people in the community.
Dollars for the Cure
On June 18, 2008, Lynette Gambino, Devyn Owens, and Mary A. Jones led the effort in hosting Dollars for the Cure at Ciao Bella Restaurant to raise money for the Komen Maryland Race for the Cure. Highlights of the night included bone density screenings, makeovers, mini-massages, pink martinis, bargain basement shopping, and a menu specially created for the night, with items such as Carfagno Bolognese. Over 200 referring physicians, medical staff, and members of the community attended. The event raised approximately $3,000! Thank you to all the American Radiology Services volunteers and Ciao Bella staff who helped to make the event a success.
The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge
On Sunday, September 14, 2008, during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the American Radiology Services staff partnered with Chesapeake Urology Associates to take part in the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge in Baltimore. The event was a 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk and all proceeds benefited the American Urological Association Foundation to improve awareness, offer screenings, and fund prostate cancer research.
The event was held at St. Joseph' s Medical Center and offered free prostate screenings to men over 50, African-American men over 40, and men with a first-degree relative with prostate cancer. Lenny Moore, former Baltimore Colt #24, Hall of Fame member, and prostate cancer survivor, served again as Honorary Chairman. Governor Martin O'Malley, Mayor Sheila Dixon, Congressman Elijah Cummings and others also pledged their support.
In addition to participating in the run/walk, the American Radiology Services staff had a booth where information was available regarding the imaging services that we offer. We also launched the American Radiology Sports website (
www.americanradiologysports.com), which provides information regarding the cause, prevention, and treatment of sports injuries.
The dream is to help find a cure for prostate cancer and American Radiology Services is committed to assist in making that dream come true.
United Way Day of Caring
United Way's message is much like that of American Radiology. Together, we are top notch leaders in the delivery of services to the community. American Radiology uses the latest technology to provide patients and their physicians superior imaging, while technology has allowed United Way to build a stronger America, community by community, to improve lives.
United Way's "Day of Caring" is just another extension of both organizations giving back. Each year thousands of volunteers across America provide time and relentless efforts in making a difference in the lives of others.
On July 25, the 2008 Day of Caring, our employee volunteers visited The Owen Brown Seniors Center in Columbia, MD, The West End Adult Day Services Center in Westminster, MD, The Therapeutic Recreational Riding Center (TRRC) in Glenwood, MD, and, for the first time, The Sunrise of Annapolis Senior Facility in Annapolis, MD.
We played Bingo, gardened, painted, cooked, took pictures, fed horses, and made great friendships. Here are a few snapshots of how American Radiology employees participated in the 2008 United Way Day of Caring Initiative.
